VersaBank Starts US Commercial Phase for VUSD Tokenized Deposits

VersaBank Starts US Commercial Phase for VUSD Tokenized Deposits

On October 1, VersaBank said it was the bank minting and burning Roughrider Coin, a live dollar token built for more than 90 North Dakota banks and credit unions. Two weeks later, its founder predicted a rapid migration away from tokens like that one. The forecast came attached to a product of his own.

VersaBank Moves VUSD Tokenized Deposits Into US Commercial Phase

VersaBank (TSX: VBNK) (NASDAQ: VBNK) announced on October 15 that it has initiated the commercial phase of its tokenized deposit program in the United States. The first piece is VUSD, a US-dollar token its subsidiary VersaBank USA will issue under the bank’s Real Bank Tokenized Deposit label. A tokenized deposit is a conventional bank deposit represented on a blockchain, so it remains a liability of the issuing bank.

VersaBank describes VUSD as interest-paying and eligible for FDIC insurance. It plans to list the token on major digital asset exchanges as soon as feasible. The release names no exchange, launch date or deposit target, and its own wording places the bank on the way toward VUSD’s launch rather than past it.

The release is dated October 15, 2026, four days before this coverage window opened. It runs here because no comparable dated story was found inside the October 19-25 window.

How VersaBank Plans to Put VUSD Deposits to Work

The money has a planned first stop. VersaBank said it will initially invest VUSD deposits in US Treasury bills, which carry a zero percent risk weighting under bank capital rules, and expects that to lift its return on common equity. After that, the deposits are meant to fund its Structured Receivable Program, a funding product for point-of-sale lenders.

A licensing business is part of the plan too. VersaBank intends to offer the same technology to US community and regional banks, and says it can move to a commercial phase in Canada once regulatory and business conditions allow. Founder and President David Taylor highlighted controls that let the bank lock down and destroy tokens regulators tie to illegal activity.

The regulatory footing is less specific than the headline. When VersaBank USA began its pilot in August 2025, the bank said it would seek a “non-objection” from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the federal regulator for national banks, before launching commercially. The October 15 release instead cites “recent certainty” about its compliance with US banking regulation. It names no regulatory action behind that phrase and does not say whether a non-objection was granted. That framing is the company’s own.

VersaBank Already Issues Roughrider Coin for the Bank of North Dakota

VersaBank is not new to issuing digital dollars. On October 1, it disclosed that VersaBank USA serves as issuer of Roughrider Coin, the Bank of North Dakota’s dollar-backed stablecoin and the first live product on Fiserv’s digital asset platform. A stablecoin is a token designed to hold a fixed value against a currency. VersaBank handles minting, burning, custody and reserve management for the coin, which is built for bank-to-bank payments.

No financial terms for the arrangement were disclosed. Taylor told investors on October 15 that he expects a rapid shift from stablecoins to tokenized deposits. That is a forecast from a bank currently running one of each.

VersaBank Q3 Results and the Pending Versa Bancorp Reorganization

The core bank is growing. For the fiscal third quarter ended July 31, VersaBank reported revenue of C$38.8 million, up 23% from a year earlier, and net income of C$10.1 million, up 53%. Total assets reached C$6.88 billion.

Capital tightened as the balance sheet grew. The bank’s Common Equity Tier 1 ratio, a core measure of loss-absorbing capital, stood at 11.47% at quarter end versus 13.56% a year earlier. Tokenized deposits are not yet a material line: VersaBank booked C$600,000 of second-quarter expenses tied to commercializing them, and the quarterly release attributes no revenue to the product.

A corporate overhaul is running alongside VUSD, and it is a separate matter. VersaBank plans to place a new Delaware holding company, Versa Bancorp, above the bank. Shareholders approved the plan in September, and Canada’s Finance Minister approved it on October 14. Completion still requires Federal Reserve Board approval, which the company says it may not receive in a timely manner, if at all.

Another Fed item is open. The US Federal Reserve extended to August 30, 2027 the deadline for VersaBank to cease or divest certain impermissible activities, including the cybersecurity services in its DRTC unit, under the terms of its 2024 approval of VersaBank’s US bank acquisition.

VersaBank Milestones: Versa Bancorp by October 31, Fed Deadline in 2027

VersaBank has targeted completion of the Versa Bancorp reorganization by the end of October 2026, subject to Federal Reserve Board approval. Its fiscal year ends October 31, 2026. For fiscal 2027, the bank has set a target of at least US$3 billion in new US Structured Receivable Program fundings. The Fed’s divestiture deadline for DRTC’s cybersecurity services is August 30, 2027. VersaBank has not disclosed a date for VUSD’s first issuance or exchange listing.

This article is based on VersaBank’s October 15, October 14, October 1 and September 3, 2026 releases distributed via Newsfile, its August 26, 2025 release distributed via PR Newswire, and third-party market capitalization data. The security discussed is VersaBank (TSX: VBNK) (NASDAQ: VBNK). aktiego.com has not received any compensation from VersaBank, its management, investor relations representatives, or any third party. No staff member or principal of aktiego.com holds a position in this security at the time of publication.

The lead announcement is dated October 15, 2026, outside this article’s October 19-25, 2026 coverage window; it is included because no comparable dated story was found inside the window. VersaBank’s market capitalization was approximately US$713 million as of October 7, 2026, per third-party data from Stock Analysis, materially larger than the small, micro and nano-cap companies this coverage usually leads with; it was selected because no comparable smaller-cap story was found for this window.

VUSD had not been issued as of the October 15 release, which describes the bank as moving toward launch. No launch date, exchange listing or deposit volume has been disclosed, and there is no assurance the product will launch or produce income. VersaBank’s reference to “recent certainty” about US regulatory compliance is the company’s own characterization: the release identifies no specific regulatory approval, and the company’s August 2025 release said an OCC non-objection would be sought before commercial launch. FDIC insurance eligibility is as described by the company and subject to FDIC policies. David Taylor’s expected shift from stablecoins to tokenized deposits is his own forecast.

The Versa Bancorp reorganization remains subject to Federal Reserve Board approval and may not close on the targeted timeline or at all; it is separate from the VUSD program and does not resolve any open regulatory matter. The Federal Reserve’s August 30, 2027 deadline for VersaBank to cease or divest certain impermissible activities, including DRTC’s cybersecurity services, remains outstanding. No financial terms were disclosed for VersaBank’s role in Roughrider Coin. VersaBank’s CET1 ratio fell to 11.47% at July 31, 2026 from 13.56% a year earlier. No going-concern language, listing deficiency notice, short seller report or concurrent equity financing was identified in the sources reviewed.
