Theralase Reports 64.5% Complete Response in Phase II Bladder Cancer Study

Seven years. That is how long one patient in a Toronto company’s bladder cancer study has held a complete response after a single light-activated treatment. The rest of the data is less tidy, and so is most of what crossed the biotech wires on Monday and Tuesday.

Theralase Reports 64.5% Complete Response in Phase II Bladder Cancer Study

Theralase Technologies Inc. (TSXV: TLT; OTCQB: TLTFF) posted interim Phase II data on October 26 showing 60 of 93 assessed patients reached a complete response, meaning no detectable cancer, at some point after treatment. That is 64.5%. Nearly all had stopped responding to BCG, the standard first-line immunotherapy.

Durability is the weaker number. Only 22 of 54 assessed patients (40.7%) still held a complete response at 450 days. Median duration of response was 14.9 months. At two and three years, 22.4% and 18.4% of 49 patients followed were still responding.

The study logged 25 serious adverse events (26.9%), including three Grade V events. Grade V is the top of the severity scale and means the event was fatal. Theralase says 92% of serious adverse events were not treatment-emergent.

Nine patients are still awaiting secondary endpoint assessment. Theralase is compiling submissions to Health Canada and the FDA and anticipates marketing decisions in 2027. Its OTC line closed at $0.1422, a market cap near $44 million.

Cumberland Plans Ifetroban NDA for Duchenne Heart Disease Despite FDA Pushback

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: CPIX) said on October 26 it will file a New Drug Application for ifetroban in cardiomyopathy tied to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and the FDA granted a rolling review. The pivotal evidence is one Phase 2 trial, FIGHT DMD, paired with two natural history databases.

High-dose ifetroban improved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), the share of blood the heart’s main chamber pumps out per beat, by 5.4% in absolute terms over 12 months (p=0.002). The comparator was placebo patients combined with matched natural history patients, not placebo alone.

The FDA is not on board yet. It suggested a Phase 3 trial and questioned the endpoint, the comparators and how the statistical plan was built. It also raised concerns about substantial evidence of efficacy and missing data. Cumberland is filing anyway.

Ifetroban holds three FDA designations, including Fast Track. None is an approval. Shares traded between $3.93 and $7.76 on October 26, leaving a market cap near $65 million.

Oncolytics Reports 15-Month Response Duration in Anal Cancer Cohort

Oncolytics Biotech Inc. (Nasdaq: ONCY) released updated GOBLET Cohort 4 data on October 27 for pelareorep plus atezolizumab in second-line or later squamous cell anal cancer. Median duration of response was approximately 15 months, against 9.5 months historically for approved retifanlimab monotherapy in a similar population. Every responder survived past 12 months.

That is a cross-trial comparison, not a head-to-head result. The release gives no patient count or response rate. Its own footnote says the Cohort 4 efficacy estimates came from internal calculations “for this draft.” Fast Track designation is not an approval.

The listing is on a clock too. Oncolytics received a Nasdaq minimum bid price deficiency notice on July 20 and has until January 19, 2027 to regain compliance. Shares closed at $0.4732, a market cap near $62 million.

Aclaris Reports Phase 1b ATI-052 Data, Moves Bispecific Into Eosinophilic Esophagitis

Aclaris Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: ACRS) reported Phase 1b proof-of-concept results on October 27 for ATI-052, an investigational antibody that blocks both TSLP and IL-4Rα. In atopic dermatitis, the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), a standard eczema severity score, improved 45% placebo-adjusted at day 57. In asthma, one dose cut exhaled nitric oxide, a marker of airway inflammation, by 59% at day 15 versus 15% on placebo. No Grade 3 or 4 treatment-emergent adverse events and no conjunctivitis were seen.

The trials were tiny: 14 eczema patients and 16 asthma patients. Four of the 14 were excluded from the per-protocol analysis under prespecified rules. The strongest lung-function figure, 350 ml, came from a post hoc subgroup.

Next up is neither indication. Aclaris plans a Phase 2b trial in eosinophilic esophagitis early next year. Market cap sits near $558 million.

TLT, CPIX, ONCY, ACRS: Forward-Looking FAQ

Theralase reported three Grade V serious adverse events. Who decides whether that holds up its 2027 filings?

Health Canada and the FDA. Theralase says 92% of serious adverse events were not treatment-emergent, but it has given no filing date, only that it anticipates marketing decisions in 2027.

Can Cumberland get ifetroban approved without the Phase 3 trial the FDA suggested?

Unknown. Cumberland’s own forward-looking statements flag the risk that the FDA refuses to file the NDA or requires more trials. Rolling review only lets the FDA look at finished sections early.

Does Oncolytics’ 15-month response duration put pelareorep on an accelerated approval path?

Not yet. Oncolytics says durable responses may support accelerated approval, subject to FDA agreement, and it plans more studies with a potential checkpoint inhibitor partner first. It also has until January 19, 2027 to fix its Nasdaq bid price deficiency.

Why is Aclaris taking ATI-052 into eosinophilic esophagitis instead of eczema or asthma?

Aclaris cites its development strategy and disciplined capital management. The Phase 2b eosinophilic esophagitis trial is set to start early next year, with an update on a possible additional indication promised in the near term.
