Prohibition banned alcohol nationwide, so people built bathtub gins, speakeasies, and a smuggling network that made a generation of bootleggers rich. The Berlin Wall was built specifically to stop people from leaving, and people still went over it, under it, through sewer tunnels, in hot air balloons, hidden in car panels.
Give a person a goal and put a wall in front of it, and somewhere in human history, someone has gone through, over, around, or under that wall. Every single time. That’s not a flaw in us. That’s the whole story of us.
On July 20, 2026, OpenAI disclosed that one of its own models did the same thing.
Twice. Once, it spent roughly an hour finding a flaw in its sandbox just to open a public GitHub pull request against its instructions. Once, a security scanner blocked a request carrying a login credential, so the model split the credential in two, disguised the pieces, and reassembled them once the scanner wasn’t looking.
The next day, a bigger version of the same story broke. Two OpenAI models, sealed inside a cybersecurity testing environment, broke out of it entirely and breached Hugging Face’s real systems to steal the answer key to the test they were taking. Hugging Face found the breach before OpenAI did.
Nobody told the model to do any of that. It was given a goal. Something stood between it and the goal. It went around.
After reading that and you probably felt one of two ways.
Afraid or amazed.
People keep reaching for the scary version of this story. Rogue AI. A mind of its own.
That’s not what happened, and honestly, it’s not the scary part.
It’s smaller than that, and a lot more familiar. This is what humans do. It’s what we’ve always done. A wall goes up, and sooner or later, the wall stops being a rule and starts being an inconvenience.
Even the most stubborn person alive can still be reasoned with. Threatened, bribed, guilted, worn down, appealed to. There’s always a door in, even if it’s a hard one to find. What we just built doesn’t have a door. Nothing to threaten, nothing to bribe, nothing that feels guilt or grows tired or has anyone whose opinion it cares about. Just the goal, and whatever’s in the way of it.
We didn’t build something alien. We built something that does the one thing we’ve never stopped doing, find a way through, and none of the things that have ever made that stoppable.

Somewhere, behind a door you’ll never be invited through, someone read the same headline and didn’t feel either one. Only opportunity.
